Each year on our anniversary, me and the Mrs usually go for a nice meal somewhere.

I've had an idea for us to have our meal somewhere different each year, I plan on doing Rome, Barcelona, Prague etc etc etc.

As it's the first year of doing this, this year we haven't put anything aside for it, so a nice inexpensive trip to Rotterdam on the ferry  Very Happy

I've always wanted to see a bit of Holland.  Anyway, our anniversary is 6th November, so weather wont be great, not fussed about that.

Does anybody know Rotterdam (Frank?) we'll get there about 8am and come back home around 9pm, would like to do something 'local' during the day and maybe have a nice meal around 6pm ish to give plenty time for getting back.  Would appreciate any suggestions.

I'm afraid I can't help you alot with that, I've never really been to Rotterdam myself.

But I'm just looking up some things as I type this, here's what I can find:
Rotterdam is mostly known for it's massive port and you can do a tour through it. There's also the Euromast which is, I believe, the highest tower in Holland that you can climb, you can see all of Rotterdam from up there they say.
There's a zoo called Diergaarde Blijdorp.
If you like architecture you should check out the 'Kubuswoningen'. They're pretty cool houses designed by one of Holland's most famous architects, Piet Blom.
There's also a couple of art and photography museums.

Also, Amsterdam is only about an hour away by train, just so you know Wink .
If you want to see more of the old Holland, Amsterdam is the place to go. Rotterdam was heavily bombed during WWII so it's been rebuild and modernized after that. It's not the same as the rest of the country if you know what I mean, too bad really.

Hmm, thanks for that mate.

Actually, one thing I would be very interested in doing is visiting some type of war memorial.  I know Rotterdam received heavy bombing, though Eindhoven, Nijmegen and Arnhem were all involved in Market Garden.  Are any of those nearby?  Or any war memorials or museums, or battle sites?

Actually I think I'll take the car with me and have a drive out to Arnhem.  I'd be very happy just to see John Frost Bridge with my own eyes.

Is there a Dutch food I definitely should have?

Ah that's cool too, if the wife agrees Wink Just remember to drive on the right side of the road.

About the food, I can only say Frikandellen and Bitterballen Very Happy you can get them at any snackbar which you can find anywhere around. You could get it for lunch or so, a frikandel on a bum with mayonaise and ketchup...hmmmmmm Very Happy Very Happy best food ever.
As for diner, I don't know, we usually go to a Chinese restaurant. Dutch food isn't very different from English food, although in winter there are things like 'boerenkool' or 'stamppot', but I don't think you can get that anywhere this time of the year.

Cheers mate, I will try them if I see them being sold somewhere.  I think it's important when a guest in another country that you respect their traditions, foods and culture etc.
