Yes there is a list of programs and we'd be more than happy to help you learn.

I recommend Photoshop if you have the money, or GIMP if you prefer free (I don't have Gimp so wouldn't personally be able to help with that much).

I'll start your request now.

Is this the kind of thing you had in mind?

(btw I hope I got the helmets the right way round, I assumed the 'G' stood for Green.)

The latest is CS4, I have CS3.

7.0 would still be good, though I don't know what features I'd have that you didn't have.  It would have most of the everyday stuff on it though.

Haha yes that is exactly how I thought when I first opened it.

In fact it was several months before I finally started using it, it looked so hard.  Trust me though, it does get easier, and it all does make sense in the end Wink

I had an idea of maybe giving you a quick tutorial on your own avatar.

Fire up photoshop.
File>New
Make it 88 x 88 at 72 dpi (you'll figure it out).

Layer > new

Right click your NFL pic in here and select copy.
Go into photoshop and edit > paste (or CTRL V)

The NFL pic is now in Photoshop.  It's slightly too big, so let's fix that up.

Edit > Free Transform (or CTRL T)

Go to one of the corners of the box and drag the corners about.  If you press SHIFT as you drag the corners about the image stays in its original perspective.  Have a bit of a play.

Copy and paste the helmets in and resize them to your own choice.  If you do CTRL T and move the cursor out a bit further from the corner, it changes into a sort of circular arrow.  If you move the mouse now, your image will rotate.  If you press shift while you rotate, it will rotate in increments of 10 pixels.

To 'flip' one of the helmets, do CTRL T and right click in the box and choose 'flip horizontal'

Once you have finished anything on the CTRL T press enter to accept your changes.  If you make a mistake, you can go edit > step backward.

To change the background (the first layer) just double click it and press enter to unlock it.  Then go edit>fill to fill with the colour of your choice.

To work on any particular layer, just click somewhere on that layer and it will be selected.

To hide a layer, press the eye button next to it.  To unhide, press the eye again.

Have a play and any questions just ask Smile

Yes you worded it right.  I was waiting for this question Smile

Find and select the 'magic wand tool'.  It'll be on the left of your screen. If you can't find it, press 'w' and it will be highlighted.  If the magic wand tool isn't highlighted, press and hold whatever is highlighted and the magic wand tool will come up in one of the options.

Make sure the helmet layer is selected.

At the top (just underneath the main menu) is the current tool menu which changes depending on which tool you have selected.

Set the tolerance to about 30, choose anti-alias and contiguous, but not sample all layers (you may not have all those options available on your version, not sure).

Click in one of the background sections you want to get rid of.  It should make a selection of a section of the background.  If it looks right press backspace and it will disappear.  Repeat for other parts of the background, then select the other helmet layer and do the same there.

You can get the latest version for a 30 day free trial from Adobe.  Also, you often find cheaper options available on such as Ebay as people sell their old copies when they upgrade.

The newer fancy stuff you don't really need, so Photoshop 7 is probably available quite reasonably these days.

Cool stuff, well done!

Have you seen the tutorials in the tutorial section?  The latest few I posted up will take several hours work each but you would learn loads from them (they may be too advanced just yet I'm not sure).

My favourite is the apple tutorial.  Takes hours to do but I love the end result.

If you press F1 or go help>photoshop help, at the bottom there is a list of all the keyboard defaults.

It could be a bit of a nightmare going through them all though, so it might be easier to post in the apple tutorial thread (so others doing it can see too) where you are stuck and I'll help you along Wink
