Should teenagers swear allegiance to the Queen? | Quote: | School leavers in the UK would swear an oath of allegiance to the Queen under new government plans. Should pupils take part in special citizenship ceremonies?
The new proposals are part of a review of citizenship by the former attorney general Lord Goldsmith at the request of Prime Minister Gordon Brown.
New immigrants to the UK already take part in citizenship ceremonies. It is hoped that they would give young people a better idea of what it means to be British.
The proposals suggest holding citizenship ceremonies in schools when pupils are about to move on to further education or employment. John Dunford from the Association of School and College leaders said it was "a half-baked idea".
Would citizenship ceremonies improve young people's idea of what it means to be British? Would you like to take part in a citizenship ceremony? Do you pledge allegiance in your country?

I swore an oath of allegiance to the queen when I joined the army, but what do you guys think?

Americans are suppose to swear an alligance to the flag of the USA.
Its not required in schools anymore, but it used to be.

Zeph thats also because we are the "free" country, and the pledge of allegience to the flag includes God in it. They banned it because they did not want to discriminate amongst the students' religions. As far as pledging allegience to the queen, if you guys are still ruled by a queen it is perfectly fine in my eyes. If not, than it should not be required.

Sounds like a dumb idea to me...
I mean, if you didn't choose to live in the country and are not capable of moving away on your own, why should you have to pledge an allegiance?

I absolutely detest our monarchy and think it's a waste of money. I think I saw on the telly the other day that our queen and family cost the tax payer about 140 million euro's a year (in a small country of 16 million people btw).
So instead of ranting on, I'll keep it short this time. The idea is a load of bollocks imo.

I personally wouldn't swear an oath to the queen because I don't believe in swearing an oath to the monarchy, nor to god as I am an atheist. But I do believe we should be encouraged to respect our flag more, become a united nation, all of us as one. Were stronger as one are we not? Instead of that group standing for this, this group standing for that, individual races and cultures being isolated and all disliking each other and working against each other. I'm not saying it will solve all our problems, but at the moment we are a fragmented race, the British people need to be whole again to make us strong. We can do this while respecting individual culture; America does it and is still a very diverse country. They hang their flags out of the windows in loyalty, we are prosecuted for doing so. Where is the sense of that?

For me, the Queen is the country, hence my swearing the oath of allegiance. It is not the person, but what that person stands for.
As the head of the commonwealth she is still quite a powerful person on the world stage, a head of over three times the amount of people the president of the USA is head of, though more a figurative head these days than a ruling head.
However, I believe that Britishness and what the commonwealth is all about is respect for others, tolerance, good naturedness, humour and all other things of that ilk...so I believe an oath of allegiance to the queen, is an oath of allegiance to all that is good in the world.
Having said that I fully understand people that don't want to, and I believe that freedom of choice is a part of what that oath is all about, which makes the oath being compulsory sort of silly.
Silliness, of course, is a part of being British too
