Make a zombie in Photoshop

Create a Zombie

I made this tutorial some time ago for another site, it is to be used with photoshop (any version will do). I asked a totally useless photoshopper to try the tutorial out and he managed to follow it ok.. I tried to incorporate as many screen shots as possible, so hope its ok. Please let me know if anything isn't right or doesn't seem to work, becasue I use the program all the time I forget that other people don't and sometimes miss out steps!

First of all, as we are going to work in layers you will need to view the layers pallet on your screen.

1) Go to the menu bar and choose - Window - Layers

2) You will need a photograph of the person you wish to zombify, I used this photo of my good friend Neil (thank you Neil!) for this project. You may use it also to practice with. Just download the image and open it with Photoshop.

3) Select the ‘Polygonal Lasso Tool’ in the toolbox and use it to draw around Neil’s head and body. It will look like a track has been drawn around the head and body (might take a few tries)

4) Next go to the menu bar and select Layer – New via copy – and make a new layer of Neil.

6) You should end up with a picture of Neil’s head and shoulders on a grey and white chequered background

7) Now w need to add the skull to Neil’s face. I used this one; you may use it also, just download it and open it in Photoshop

Cool Now, on the skull picture you need to again draw around the skull with the ‘polygonal Lasso Tool’ using a ‘feather of 3pts and make a new layer. Then select the ‘move Tool’ and drag the skull layer onto your picture of Neil. You do this holding down the ‘left’ mouse button and simply dragging the image to the other. You will need to reposition the skull over Neil's face so it fits nicely.

If the Skull is a little small or too large you can alter it parameters by going to the menu bar ad selecting Edit – Free transform and grabbing the little squares with your cursor. When the image is sized how you like it, press ‘Enter’ on your keyboard.

9) Now you have positioned the skull you need to reduce it to cover about half of the face. With the ‘Polygonal Lasso tool’ with a feather 0f 3pts, draw around about half of the skull. The track should look something like the image below.

10) Then while the skull is selected in the pallet click ‘add layer mask’.

11) Set the ‘Opacity’ on the layers pallet to ‘54%’

12) Next we need to apply the putrid cracked skin. I used a textured image of some cracked earth that I downloaded of the internet. You may use it also, just download it and open it in Photoshop.

13) Take the cracked earth image and again select the ‘move tool’ and drag & drop it on to your zombie image. Position he cracked earth over the face.

14) On the layers pallet, select the ‘cracked earth’ layer and click in the little ‘eye’ tick box. This will make the image disappear (but only from view not from your picture). You are then free to view the face underneath. While still clicked on the ‘cracked earth’ layer select the ‘polygonal Lasso Tool’ and draw around the other half of Neil's face. You may over lap the skull also o give it that peeping through look. Then un-tick the ‘eye box’ on the layers pallet.

15) Hit ‘add layer mask’ on your layers pallet, and set the ‘opacity’ to ‘34%’ and set the ‘blending mode’ to ‘hardlight’.

16) You should have something that resembles this now

17) Once you are happy with the settings of the ‘skull’ and ‘cracked earth’ it would be a good idea to merge these layers. Therefore on the layers pallet tick the ‘link box’ on all of the layers and then go to the menu bar and select – Layer - Merge Linked.

You should have only one layer in your pallet now

1Cool Now we need to alter the eyes to make them look hollow and dark. Therefore on the ‘Brush Tool’ in its setting box, change the size of the brush tool to 32 pts the Mode to ‘Normal’ and the ‘Opacity’ to 29%. Hit ‘D’ on your keyboard to change the colour to black.

19) Now use the ‘brush tool’ with these settings to colour in the eyes, do it how ever you think looks best.

20) Now we need to make the picture look dark and grungy. In the layers pallet click the ‘Create New layer’ icon.

21) A new blank layer has now appeared in the pallet. Make sure the layer is on top of the zombie layer. While this is selected go to the menu bar – Filters – Render – Clouds. You need to select quite a dark cloud, so you might have to do it a few times to get the right one. Set the ‘blending mode to ‘hard light’

22) Next make another new layer in the pallet, making sure this one is now on top, and again apply the ‘clouds’ filter and this time set the ‘Opacity’ to ‘44%’.

23) Next go to the Menu bar – Layers – Flatten Image

24) The rest is just fiddling with the brightness/contrast and hue/saturation

And there is your basic Zombie! (change the contrast and light settings to your own taste)
Bravo
