is it possible............

to make a PNG file animated? sort of like an animated gif?
I was just wondering if anyone knew because the smaller gif files I animate sometimes endup looking not to 'polished' and I wanted something different to play with

png files cannot be animated, the only non-flash animation you can make (i'm pretty sure) would be a gif.

It is possible, but not a lot of browsers / other applications support it...

More info here.

The unpolishedness of an animated gif comes from any semi-transparencies you have in the image, as the gif format doesn't support them (it just replaces them with full colour, hence the blockiness).  SO if you make sure your image either has a background, or the colour is full and your animation should be fine.

The png format does support semi transparencies, hence looks a lot better.  It does not support animation.

the Apng format looks good (thanks for the link Brandon).

it looks like the windows explorer doesn't seem to support the APNG files according to the article. i might try to find softwear to make an APNG file, post it here and see who can view it.

This is a APNG file, moving arrows. Sadly it can as of yet only be seen in mozzila firefox version 3.0 (here)

This extension for firefox allows you to make APNG files very easilythis extension in the plugins or extensions folders. Viewed in windows ect it it a still image.
However I'm not sure if the extension is required to 'view' apng files.

the APNG animation looks much nicer but unfortunatley as most people have windows explorer its is of no use untill microsoft catch up I guess.

Nope, can't see the animation in IE7.

Firefox is a pile of junk in my experience, tried it several times and uninstalled every time.
