I recommend an avatar size of 80 x 80 pixels. If this post is deemed worthless, do not hesitate to delete it immediately.
I have experimented around many different pixel sizes and have concluded that 80 x 80 pixels is more than enough of a size to view, but it isn't jumping out of the screen, either. An example of an 80 x 80 pixel-sized avatar:

I tend to like avatars at around 100x100 or 120x120 because I can fit more detail into them and make them look more unique, but I do agree that 80x80 makes the forum look much nicer as they dont quite jump out at the viewer as much.
but saying that, one of my favourite avatars I have made is only 50x50 and I absolutly love it because of the simplicity.

On this forum I am a bit more lenient with avatars as artists are free to express themselves, though absolutely massive ones I wouldnt really like too much as it could slow peoples computers down.
Only once have I deleted someones signature, as it was 1024x800 or something, totally ridiculous.
