All you need is the software and practise 
In fact, that is the idea behind CG Arts, artists get to practice, while people get free artwork. The more stuff you do for people, the better you get.
Some of the folks who never knew the first thing before they started on this forum now are earning money from making artwork. There are at least three that no longer have time to come here but are making money from the skills they learned here, and good luck to them I say...that's what it's all about

one thing for the font, set the anti-aliasing to smooth or crisp, the text will look a lot better.

If you have Photoshop, it is about a million times better than Gimp.
It's difficult to get started on, but once you do nothing else comes close
