£10 licence to smoke proposed

Smokers could be forced to pay £10 for a permit to buy tobacco if a government health advisory body gets its way.
No one would be able to buy cigarettes without the permit, under the idea proposed by Health England.

I do think the whole issue is worthy of a good debate. I know a lot of people wish to smoke, I also know they don't do others any harm (not including those who smoke in front of children and during pregnancy etc, I mean those that smoke with a little courtesy to others).

There are, however a lot of people that smoke and wish to heck it wasn't so darn hard to stop! When I smoked, I wished they'd make it illegal, ban them worldwide, anything. So therefore I remain in favour of anything that makes it a little more difficult to smoke, hopefully giving people that extra impetus they need...

The only problem with that is, it makes life a lot harder for lawful, decent people, that do truthfully wish to smoke as a right and want. Disregarding peoples rights (so long as they don't clash with the rights of others) is a dangerous road to go down.

It's a toughie, thats for sure.

I encourage anything that will help people stop smoking but this isn't gonna do anything.
£10 isn't much and the real problem I see are underage smokers and they wont need liscences because they dont buy them from shops they buy them from people who get loads of them for cheap from abroad.

Also, all I can see this leading upto is the same being introduced for drinking.

I don't drink or smoke though so I'm not really that interested in what happens but I just can't see this having any effect.

Wow...  These laws got introduced a while ago here in Ohio(USA).
its a 100 dollar fine if you get caught smoking in a public place.

Me personally...  I'm an under-age smoker...
I could care less if you look at me difrently but i am.
anyways...

I think that banning smoking in certain places would be a helpful thing to those of you who don't smoke.
Kuz if I didnt smoke, I wouldn't want people who DID smoke to be around me.
Which is why as a smoker,
I only smoke around other smokers.
and if there is a non-smoker around, i walk a bit aways.

It's fine to smoke outdoors here, just not inside a public building.  As we understand more and more of jut how bad smoking is for you, the laws are changing to try and keep the smokers right to smoke, yet allow people a right to breathe smoke-free air.  It's a bit of a juggling act, and a hard one to get right I think...

The smoking issue is a tough one, just like the alcohol issue. They installed proper laws in Holland now, that smoking is not allowed in public buildings, train stations(indoors and outdoors), restaurants and bars(soon) and in the working area. Even the casino's in Holland will start the introduction soon.
For me this enough. I just want to breath fresh air. I do not want to take away a habbit from people that they simply do not wish to give up. Of course there are people that do want to quit, but have difficulties doing so. Imo no measure to make it more difficult or expensive is gonna help people to quit. The results show it here in Holland, taxes have gone up by the extremes and the figures do not indicate more quitters.
People only quit, cause they REALLY want to. You might not be able to quit in 1 go. It's a matter of that point in life coming around, that you think to yourself: "WHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA ENOUGH!" and then you quit.
Just like any other addiction, I was a compulsive eater and gained a lot of weight (I weighed 100+ kg). Until I got really really fed up with myself (of course 1 attempt didn't do it). Not just fed up, but REALLY fed up and finally lost the weight. I weigh 85 kg at the moment and never ever wanna go back to that place in my life again.
So it's all just a matter of real will power.

I personally think it's a shame when I see young kids smoking and/or drinking alcohol. That all starts at home in most of the cases and of course don't forget peer pressure. But I do think that educating your kids about the hazards and setting a good example, will make it easier for them to resist the temptation. Making them understand is the key, but a lot of people just don't understand. They think it's plain normal to get pissed every night in front of your kids.
Being an example to your kids is a whole other discussion anyways. I could go on for ages about that too, but won't bother you guys with that Very Happy.

And before I get Zeph pissed at me. Don't get me wrong. I do not look down on people that smoke or drink or do whatever. We all do things in life that aren't good us. OK some more than others, but everyone has their weakness.
But in the end you are poisoning your body and it's best to quit while you are still young. I know it won't be easy if you do get to that point in life that you will be thinking: "WHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA ENOUGH!" In advance I wish you success and stamina when you get there my friend!

I wouldn't get pisse bcause i believe everybody is entitled to their own opinion and I respect that, even if i don't agree.
In this case, I do agree.

Yeah...  Thats kinda how it is here.
Like...  You can walk down the street and smoke, but you can't come within 15 feet of a public building or if its a non-smoking property, obviously, its illegal.
