Greetings everyone! Especially Bravo who knows me from another forum.

OK, I'm writing a game based around the old arcade game STARFORCE (See Here). I've made a start on the tileset:

But I really need help with the 'edging' that goes around the metal slabs. Take a look at this screen grab and you'll see what I'm on about:

http://www.madladdesigns.co.uk/games/starforce/starforce_01.png

It's the green and orange edging that looks like a planet surface, if anyone can help me with it I'd be grateful and of course you'll get credit in the game AND a link. Wink

Ok, here's the specs: it's all based around a 32x32 grid, like the tileset above. Here's the game in progress (don't expect much, I've just started and the ship graphic will change!) if you want to see how it goes:

http://www.madladdesigns.co.uk/games/starforce/starforce.exe

Thanks for your time

You want us to use the pic above?

Do you want the edging done within the same size as the tiles you have or new tiles made with the edging around?

(I hope you know what I mean)

Oh, and good to see you ND Wink

Right, what I'm after is is the planetry edging that goes around the steel slabs, I can do the steely looking stuff (you're quite welcome to create any of your own Wink) but the planetary platform I can't:

Does this make it clearer Ez-WiN?

Bravo
You can used the pic above if you wish, i'm using a 32x32 tileset so each block should be 32x32. I just need the edging (no need for you guys to do extra work), but if you wish to create a mixture of tile and edging, perhaps the tile cracking and edging showing through? then that would be great!

Also if there is anything you wish to add scenery wise then i'd be more than happy to include it.

Only problem is, its a bit crap

Some of the other artists are better at this sort of stuff than I am, might be worth giving it 24 hours and see what they come up with

I've created a template that can be used to create the ground on:

The light grey lines help to line up the scenery so they all fit together.

And I came up with this:

Crap I know, but you get the general idea. So any scenery you can come up with would be ideal, thanks.

Hey mdcowboy93, I need more ground based objects like these:

They are 32 height by 64 width (to include the shadow) and are based around a grey / silver colour scheme. The very bottom-left pixel will determine the transparent colour, so if the bottom-left pixel was black, then black will be transparent. (This is why it's all surrounded by pink as this will be the transparency colour and is not used anywhere else).

Any odd looking structures you can come up with, or if anybody else can come up with, would be great.

Thanks!

I've had to do them again as they didn't seem to be lining up for some reason!? (my fault, not yours Bravo). Anyway, here's the game in progress if you want to have a play:

Starforce - 2.18mb - zip

You control the ship with either the cursor keys or A,S,D,W. Control [CTRL] to shoot. You can shoot some of the ground objects and once you get into empty space, the demo is effectively over (you'll just keep moving through empty space). ESCAPE to exit.

Tell me what you think so far.

Oh don't worry, there'll be plenty of action, enemies, bosses, things to blow up, scores, hi scores, hidden features, powerups..... At the moment I'm concentrating on the graphics so there's not much to do than shoot a few ground objects, I just wanted feedback on the graphical look. Be patient...

Wink

Customisable keys would be good...

Or at least SPACE to fire Wink

Over the weekend I might have another go at this, its straight drawing rather than image manipulation which is why it is hard for me personally as I suck at drawing lol...but I will have another go, tis a long weekend off work after all.

Unfortunately, some keyboards (mine included) have a weird quirk in which you can't do diagonally left-up or left-down AND press SPACE at the same time, the ship won't shoot (I know a few people who this happens to) so it had to be something other than SPACe to shoot Sad

Redefinable keys? Which keys do you want and I'll see if I can add them.

If you don't want to try at the planetry scenery, how about the ground objects?

That would be great! There's a post somewhere above about what kind of objects, they need to be in .gif format so I can add them, but there's nothing stopping you from animating them! But no more than 4 frames of animation (otherwise the program will be hugh as there's all sorts to be added yet!)

Thanks to everyone for their help.

I see you're making it in Gamemaker. Awesome. I've been fooling around with it for a while and I was quite good with it untill I had to start scripting, which I didn't really understood back then, I might give it another try.
