This photo looks to be post D-Day (June 6th 1944) though it could be of landings in Italy.
Note the seeming indifference shown by the other soldiers, with the only mark of respect being the crossed rifles.
Bear in mind death was so commonplace then that one more was neither here nor there, and from what I have read (from various war memoirs) a lot of soldiers were relieved that it wasn't them, yet were incredibly grieved afterwards.
